2 Out of 3 Milwaukee Teens are Having Sex
Eye Opening Study Says Nearly 60% of Milwaukee Teens are Sexually Active
Milwaukee Public School (MPS) system serves the majority of school aged youth in the county and the largest population of urban minority youth in the state. In 2005, Milwaukee Public Schools conducted and presented its annual Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).
Survey results place Milwaukee at the top of the charts with the highest rates of teen pregnancy, STDs and all other associated socio-economic and health disparities across the USA.
Evidence that too many of our teens are still making high-risk sexual decisions.
The following is a summary of the MPS student survey findings, and are a representation of all Milwaukee County and urban youth across the state.
- 12.2% reported their experience with sexual intercourse occurred by age 12
- 59.1% reported having sexual intercourse and being sexually active.
- 22.8% reported having sexual intercourse with 4 or more partners in their lifetime
- 31.3% of sexually active MPS high school students reported not using protection during sexual intercourse
By supporting local agencies like Rosalie Manor and MAFTA, our community can continue to help decrease the rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Talk to your teen today. Whether he or she is a virgin or not, abstinence – not having sex – is the only sure way to avoid an unwanted pregnancy or serious STD.
